KALAMAZOO, Mich., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- John W. Brown,
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stryker Corporation
(NYSE: SYK), today announced that David J. Simpson, Vice President, Chief
Financial Officer and Secretary of the Company has been appointed to Executive
Vice President, effective January 1, 2003. In this newly created role, Dave
will focus his efforts on various broad scale executive duties, including
Investor Relations, Business Development and Strategic Planning.
Dean H. Bergy, currently Vice President, Finance will be promoted to Vice
President, Chief Financial Officer and Secretary, effective January 1, 2003.
Mr. Bergy joined the Company as Controller in 1994 and was promoted to Vice
President, Finance for the Medical Division in 1996. He assumed his current
role in 1998. Prior to joining Stryker, Mr. Bergy was a Senior Manager with
Ernst & Young LLP. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the
Harvard PMD Program.
Mr. Brown stated Dave Simpson has done an excellent job for us since he
joined Stryker Corporation in 1987. Under Dave's financial leadership,
Company sales have grown by a factor of twenty, and net earnings have grown
twenty-five fold. Dave was a major contributor to the successful acquisition
of Howmedica, and has developed strong Finance, Accounting, Tax and Treasury
organizations. We are extremely pleased that Dave will step into this role
with the Company as he transitions toward retirement over the next few years.
Mr. Brown added that Dean Bergy has made significant contributions to the
Company in the Finance, Accounting and Tax areas over the past several years.
His responsibilities have been both broad and deep, including all internal
financial management and reporting, SEC and NYSE reporting, and all income tax
planning and compliance. We are pleased to have someone with Dean's talent,
drive and character to serve as our next Chief Financial Officer.
